Sophomore graphic design students recently wrapped up a workshop led by the Scripps Networks Design and Motion Team.
Members of the Scripps team spent the last week of February leading students through creative exercises to sharpen their motion design skills. Scripps professionals served as mentors and trainers for the students, who were attempting their first animation design.
The workshop was led by Scripps Networks Motion and Design Director Peter Franks.
“The Scripps Networks Design and Motion department is proud and excited to have alumni from the Graphics Design program lead a week-long workshop in motion,” said Franks. “Our goal is to continue to give the students an opportunity to see how they can apply their design talents to an area of great opportunity and growth around the world.”
Through the workshop, students created a spirit creature that represents them as an individual. They were led through the ideation process to generate concepts, then developed a design for the creature and produced a five-second animation that brought it to life. The Scripps team combined all of the students’ animations into a single animation with a musical score created and produced for the project by an in-house Scripps Networks musician.
“These students were just accepted into the graphic design program, so this was a great opportunity for them,” said Sarah Lowe, associate professor of graphic design. “In addition to allowing them to delve into motion design, the workshop also gave them the chance to work with professional designers and establish relationships that could lead to career opportunities down the line.”
This is the fourth year that the Scripps team has collaborated with the Graphic Design program to conduct the workshop. Many of the Scripps team members are alumni of the program, which is housed in the School of Art.
