Got any lunch plans? Why not go for a walk around campus?

Walking is a great form of exercise for anyone, regardless of age or fitness level.

  • Beauty shot of the dogwood flowers in circle park in the springFor those who prefer to wander, the UT Gardens offers a fragrant escape with more than 4,000 annuals, perennials, herbs, tropicals, trees, shrubs, vegetables, and grasses to enjoy.
  • The new pedestrian bridge to the Hill offers the perfect gateway for walkers to go see the improvements on all sides of Ayres Hall as well as the expanded courtyard around Perkins Hall.
  • Several spots on campus connect walkers to the city’s multiple greenways and Volunteer Landing, which runs parallel to the Tennessee River. Each offers unique trails and beautiful scenery.

UT’s Center for Physical Activity and Health has also created several walking loops with three starting locations—the agriculture campus, the Health and Physical Education and Recreation Building, and the Hill.

Walkers can choose from nine of the center’s PDF maps that feature one-, two- and three-mile courses. There’s also a free smartphone app called Map My Walk for walkers to create a walking profile and log their miles. The routes are safe and convenient for all UT faculty, staff, and students to enjoy.

Walk with a Vol

The center also hosts Walk with a Vol each month to promote walking around campus. The thirty-minute walk features a special guest from UT’s campus as well as water and light snacks. Participants are encouraged to grab friends and co-workers to join in the free monthly event. Walkers who attend are entered to win a FitBit Flex.

The next Walk with a Vol is at noon Friday, April 22, at Thompson-Boling Arena. Sarah Colby, assistant professor of nutrition, will be the special guest at the walk.

Whatever path you choose, get out of the office, enjoy the spring weather, and get moving!
