National Outlets Feature Alderman about Confederate Monument Debate in New Orleans

Derek AldermanThe Associated Press recently featured Derek Alderman, professor and head of the Department of Geography, in a story about New Orleans’ quest to make a break with its confederate past. Alderman is mapping Confederate symbolism nationwide.

Alderman noted that the New Orleans situation reflects a new push to rethink Confederate history and iconography. “It is a grand scale of symbolic rewriting of the landscape,” he told the AP. “It certainly represents a wholesale re-questioning of the legitimacy of remembering the Confederacy so publicly.”
