The US Census Bureau’s American Community Survey celebrates its tenth anniversary today with the release of five-year statistics based on data collected from 2010 to 2014.
In recognition of the national anniversary, the Tennessee State Data Center is releasing data dashboards specific to Tennessee.
A partner to the US Census Bureau, the Tennessee State Data Center is housed within UT’s Center for Business and Economic Research.
Highlights of the new ACS findings include:
Tennessee’s total population, households, and workers 16 years and over increased when comparing the 2010-2014 ACS data to 2005-2009. The same was true for metropolitan statistical areas and urban areas of Tennessee. Individuals in the state are also aging and becoming more educated than before. The 50-74 age range makes up a larger percentage of the population than in 2005-2009, and the percentage of people with a bachelor’s degree or higher has risen to 24.4 percent.

The five-year ACS statistics provide insight into population, education, household and families, transportation, and income and poverty levels, among other data, for all areas of any population size in the United States.
Nationally, this is the first time that two sets of five-year ACS data that do not overlap—2005 to 2009 and 2010 to 2014—can be compared.
“The ACS is a very important tool for researchers, regional planning agencies and entrepreneurs, to name a few, as it is the only resource to get this detail and variety of information in one place for all areas,” said Melissa Stefanini, director of the Tennessee State Data Center.
The Tennessee State Data Center provides US Census data and products, training and technical assistance to users, feedback to the Census Bureau on data usability, and assistance to state and local government.
