UT’s School of Architecture is among the best in the nation, according to Design Futures Council’s 2016 DesignIntelligence annual report.
The architecture school ranked 13th among those at public universities and 27th among private and public institution programs.
“A ranking based on real-world perceptions of our graduates in the workplace tells us we are doing the right things,” said Scott Poole, dean of UT’s College of Architecture and Design. “Our faculty provides an innovative education to our graduates, ensuring they are well prepared for their futures and equipped to make professional contributions to society. We’re also fortunate to have alumni all over the world give their time and resources to support and mentor our young designers.”
Poole noted that the accolades are a timely affirmation. The College of Architecture and Design is now celebrating its 50th year.
DesignIntelligence is considered by the design industry the foremost source of rankings for design programs. The report is compiled annually by the Design Futures Council, whose research ranks undergraduate and graduate programs from the perspective of leading practitioners with direct experience hiring and supervising the performance of recent architecture and design graduates.
The council also named James Rose, adjunct assistant professor of architecture, one of the Top 25 Most Admired Educators for 2016. In the report, Rose was noted for his focus on emerging technologies and design-build and for advancing the creation of net-zero buildings, including collaboration with the UT-ORNL Governor’s Chair for Energy and Urbanism.
Rose has led net-zero projects at the college for the past ten years, including the most recent collaborative success with AMIE—Additive Manufacturing and Integrated Energy—a system involving a 3-D-printed structure and vehicle that together produce and share energy.
Faculty from the College of Architecture and Design have been recognized by the council four out of the last five years. In addition to Rose, Ryann Aoukar, associate professor in interior design, was a 2015 Top 25 Most Admired Educator, and Scott Poole was named to the list in 2012 and 2014.
