Smithsonian Touts UT’s Use of SynDaver in Engineering

MABElineSmithsonian, the official magazine of the Smithsonian Institution, recently had a prominent spot for UT’s SynDaver “Mabeline” in its story on the rising use of artificial cadavers at medical schools.

Unlike most places, Mabeline—so named because of her housing in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Biomedical Engineering, or MABE—is used in engineering classes.

That unique aspect of her use brought her and Research Assistant Professor Elizabeth Barker to the attention of Smithsonian.

Mabeline not only gives students “an accurate human body model as a reference for their design projects, but also can be used as an experimental tool for testing various device prototypes”, Barker told the magazine.
