The American Association for the Advancement of Science has appointed as fellows two researchers with UT ties.

The association is honoring C. Neal Stewart Jr. and Parans Paranthaman for their distinguished efforts to advance science and its applications.

Stewart is a professor in the Department of Plant Sciences in the UT Institute of Agriculture. He also is the Ivan Racheff Chair of Excellence in the UT College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. The association is honoring him for his contributions to the field of plant molecular genetics, particularly bioenergy and biotechnology.

Paranthaman serves on the faculty of the UT Bredesen Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Graduate Education. He also is a Distinguished Research Staff Member and leader of the Materials Chemistry group of Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Chemical Sciences Division. The association is honoring him for his contributions to the field of chemistry, including materials for superconductors, solar cells, lithium ion batteries, and processing of magnetic materials.

The association is honoring 347 members this year. Stewart, Paranthaman, and fellow honorees will be feted at the professional society’s annual meeting in February.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science is the world’s largest general scientific society and publisher of the journal, Science. It was founded in 1848 and includes 254 affiliated societies and academies of science serving 10 million individuals.
