Are you required to take Communication Studies 210 or 240 but have public speaking anxiety? Though all 210 and 240 classes assist students with managing speech anxiety, Communication Studies offers specialized sections of these courses designed for students with high speech anxiety.

Those enrolled in CMST 240 for speech-anxious students satisfy their oral communication general education requirement. There will be no designation on a student’s transcript that indicates it was a “speech anxious” section. The course covers the same material as the traditional sections and students deliver individual and team presentations. These sections are capped at fifteen rather than the twenty-five students in traditional classes.

This spring, the speech anxious sections will meet on Tuesday/Thursday from 9:40 to 10:55 a.m. and 11:10 a.m. to 12:25 p.m.

Interested students should contact Suzy Prentiss, senior lecturer in the school of Communication Studies. Students will need to complete an online assessment and a written application. When registering for the course, search for the section with the designation of “this class is reserved for students with speech anxiety.”

Students or faculty/advisors with questions can contact Suzy at sprenti1@utk.edu.
