The Center for International Education host its annual International Education Week Sept. 21–25 with events that celebrate the diverse culture on campus and showcase the university’s global initiatives.
On Friday, September 25, the community is invited to the thirty-first annual International Festival from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Pedestrian Walkway. UT’s international organizations will sell food and artifacts and stage live performances representing their culture.
More than twenty organizations will participate in the festival, including the African Student Association, the Portuguese Language Club, Students Helping Honduras, the Vols Japanese Club, and the Nepali Students’ Association.
Members of the community are also invited to participate in a variety of events throughout the week leading up to the festival:
Monday, September 21
4:00 to 5:00 p.m.—International Photo Exhibit Opening Reception, International House (I-House): The I-House will announce the winners of the “My Home” photo contest and reveal the new photos on display in the building.
Tuesday, September 22
11:30 a.m.—Mystical Arts of Tibet: Sand Mandala Painting, McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture: Tibetan Buddhist monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastery will conduct a mandala sand painting beginning Tuesday, September 22, and concluding on Friday, September 25.
8:00 p.m.—From Mountains of Zakopane to El Yunque: Francisco Caben (violin) and Kevin Class (piano), Natalie L. Haslam Music Center: The School of Music will host an evening of music from Poland and Puerto Rico.
Wednesday, September 23
10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.—Study Abroad Fair, John C. Hodges Library: Students will explore options for study abroad programs and internships abroad during fall, spring, mini-term, and summer sessions.
1:00 to 3:00 p.m.—Ethiopia International Coffeehouse, John C. Hodges Library Mary E. Greer Room: The International Coffeehouse will highlight the country of Ethiopia with samplings of local coffee, tea, and food.
1 to 4 p.m.—Language and World Business Poster Presentations, I-House: Poster groups will present specific business ventures in the global market and discuss cultural business practices in certain countries.
Thursday, September 24
11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.—Yoga Fest, Circle Park: The Center for Health Education and Wellness will host the second UT Yoga Fest. Students, faculty, and staff are invited attend an afternoon of relaxing yoga practice and meditation. There will be raffle prizes, professional instruction, and healthy snacks available.
3:00 to 4:00 p.m.—Gilman Study Abroad Scholarship Workshop, I-House: Students will learn about the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, which offers students up to $8,000 for academic studies or internships abroad.
6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.—The Rise of the ‘Russian World’ and its Consequences, I-House: Oleg Manaev, a political science lecturer, will lead this lecture and conclude with a discussion.
