The campus community is invited to the dedication of the new Student Union at 4:00 p.m. Friday, September 11 on the Plaza of the Student Union. The event will celebrate the midpoint in the multiyear project and will include a ribbon cutting across the Pedestrian Bridge.

The program will feature Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek; Vice Chancellor for Student Life Vince Carilli; alumnus Alan Wilson, CEO of McCormick & Company; Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Life and Dean of Students Melissa Shivers; and student speakers.

All attendees are encouraged to take a self-guided tour of the new facility before or after the ceremony. No RSVP is necessary.

The VolShop and VolTech locations in the Student Union will have special offers and discounts throughout the day on Friday in celebration of the grand opening of phase one of the project.

VolTech will host a Tech Fair in the Level G3 Atrium of the Student Union from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. VolTech will offer freebies from Apple, Dell, Yurbuds, and SkullCandy. Additionally, there will be various door prizes, including a skateboard, iPads, and more. Additional deals for Friday include:

Customers that spend $50 in the VolShop will receive a free Colosseum T-shirt. Customers who spend $100 will receive a free wristband. VolShop will also give a free prize pack that includes a sling bag, water bottle and rally towel to the first 100 customers that spend $20 after 2:00 p.m.

Customers can also register for free door prizes in the VolShop. The store has footballs autographed by Butch Jones, a GoPro Hero 4 (retail $399—courtesy of MBS Books), a Toshiba Satellite Computer (retail $469—courtesy of MBS Books), a mini fridge, a MisFit Flash Fitness + Sleep Monitor (retail $29.99), and more.

The first phase of the building, which opened in June, features the VolShop, VolBooks, and VolTech stores. Additionally, the space offers extensive dining and seating as well as space for the Center for Career Development. Learn more about the first phase of the Student Union.

Construction on phase two is underway. When completed in 2018, the second phase will include a large auditorium/performance venue, a large ballroom, additional dining areas, lounges, and additional program, conference, and meeting space. Once completed, the building will represent the largest single construction project in UT’s history.
