The Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy has released its schedule of events for this fall.
A new lecture series, the Howard Baker Memorial Lecture, has been added to honor the memory of the late senator and ambassador.
The semester’s events and lectures are as follows:
- September 10—Berrien Moore, Energy and Environmental Forum, 1:00—2:30 p.m. in the Toyota Auditorium of the Baker Center, 1640 Cumberland Ave. Moore is the Chesapeake Energy Corporation Chair in Climate Studies, dean of the College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences, director of the National Weather Center, and vice president for weather and climate programs at the University of Oklahoma.
- September 17—Colleen Jonsson, Energy and Environmental Forum, 1:00—2:30 p.m. in the Baker Center Toyota Auditorium. Johnson is the director of the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis and a microbiology professor at UT.
- September 17—Celebrate Constitution Day and Citizenship Day. Participants can sign the Constitution and register to vote on the Johnson-Ward Pedestrian Walkway, learn about the death penalty in Tennessee (9:40 a.m.) and join an interactive lecture and discussion at 5:30 p.m. in the Toyota Auditorium.
- September 30—Secretary John Snow, Baker Distinguished Lecture, 5:30 p.m. in the Sandra G. Powell Music Hall of the Natalie L. Haslam Music Center, 1741 Volunteer Blvd. Snow is the former US secretary of the treasury (2003—2006), CEO of CSX Railroads (1988—2003), and administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
- October 6—Krista Wiegand, “Semester at Sea: Krista’s Excellent Adventure,” 11:00 a.m. in the Baker Center Reading Room. Wiegand is a Baker Faculty Fellow and an associate professor of political science.
- October 12—Steve Sin, Global Security Lecture: “Searching for the Nuclear Silk Road,” 5:30 p.m. in the Toyota Auditorium. Sin is a senior researcher at the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism at the University of Maryland.
- October 21—Becky Davis, “Fracking: Economics and Policy Impact,” 11:00 a.m. in the Baker Center Reading Room. Davis is a Baker Center graduate research assistant.
- October 22—Jack Shaheen, Global Security Lecture: “Arabs and Muslims in American Popular Culture,” 6:00 p.m. in the Toyota Auditorium. Shaheen is an author, lecturer, and film consultant specializing in addressing stereotypes of Middle Easterners.
- October 28—Former Japanese prime minister Yasuo Fukuda, Howard Baker Memorial Lecture, 5:30 p.m. in the Toyota Auditorium.
- November 4—Brandon Prins, “The Changing Face of US Foreign Policy: Partisan Opposition to Presidential Diplomacy,” 10:00 a.m. in the Baker Center Reading Room. Prins is a Baker Fellow in global security and a political science professor.
- November 12—Charles Perrings, Energy and Environmental Forum, 1:00–2:30 p.m. in the Toyota Auditorium. Perrings is a professor of environmental economics and director of ecoSERVICES at Arizona State University.
All events and lectures are free and open to the public.
