The university is gearing up for fall semester and the beginning of classes on Wednesday, August 19.

Construction on campus and the City of Knoxville’s upgrades to Cumberland Avenue will present challenges to faculty and staff as well as students and their families traveling to campus.

Haslam Scholars and first-year residents participating in the Ignite Serves program have already started moving to campus.

On Wednesday, residence hall check-in is open to sophomores and above, women participating in sorority recruitment, and students in the second summer session of the Ignite program. This is an estimated 1,900 people.

On Friday, students in Living and Learning communities will move in on a staggered schedule. This will involve an estimated 800 people.

On Saturday, all residence halls will open at 8:00 a.m. for first-year students. At least 2,500 people are expected to be on campus Saturday.

A full move-in schedule is available online.

Cumberland Avenue is open but reduced to one lane each direction between Alcoa Highway and Twenty-Second Street. Those needing to access campus should take Neyland Drive to either Joe Johnson Drive or Lake Loudoun Boulevard.

Andy Holt Avenue and surrounding streets should be avoided if at all possible during move-in days.

On Wednesday, Andy Holt Avenue will be closed from West Volunteer Boulevard to Pat Summitt Street. Twentieth Street also will be closed. On Friday, Andy Holt Avenue will be west-bound only from Melrose Place to Twentieth Street. On Saturday, Andy Holt Avenue will be closed from West Volunteer Boulevard to Pat Summitt Street. Pat Summitt Street will be south-bound only from Andy Holt Avenue to Volunteer Boulevard. Twentieth Street also will be closed.

Pat Summitt Street is closed from Fraternity Park Drive to Chamique Holdsclaw Drive. Only one lane is open from Volunteer Boulevard to Fraternity Park Drive, and vehicles can only turn right into Fraternity Park Drive. This will not affect students moving in to fraternity housing, and other traffic can return to Volunteer Boulevard by continuing west on Fraternity Park Drive. Both lanes of this section of Pat Summitt Street will close at 5:00 p.m. Friday, August 21, for utility work. Parking spaces for the pharmacy in the Student Health Center will remain accessible.
