A multi-faceted improvement project is now underway at Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium on campus.

The site is closed until the project is completed in late 2016.

The project includes a reconfigured infield, new irrigation and site drainage systems, resurfacing of the track, and power and data improvements.

The existing track will be resurfaced with new markings, and the steeplechase lane and pit will be relocated. The new infield will have additional synthetic surface areas, a new sand-filled pit, and new track and field equipment.

Workers will add pavement sections on the north side of the track, a new paved area with synthetic surface for a meet management area, and a new infield lawn with irrigation and site drainage systems.

Other aspects include revisions of the utilities infrastructure for providing power and data service for event timing and communications.

Electrical service improvements will allow for upgraded field lighting on existing light poles and for future facilities.

The project addresses the age of the track and its drainage system, optimizes the organization of the infield for performance and safety, and improves the technology for timing devices.
