Jack Dongarra Interviewed About President Obama’s Call for Exascale Computer

The quest for ever-bigger and better computers has led to a call by President Obama for the U.S. to build an exoscale computer 30 times more powerful than current machines.

While that journey is a suitable goal in and of itself, pressure from China might be giving no focus to U.S. efforts, according to UT’s Jack Dongarra.

Dongarra, director of the Innovative Computing Laboratory at UT, told Science Magazine that recent gains by China have been their own call to action of sorts.

The Top 500 list, compiled in part by Dongarra, lists the worlds 500 fastest computers, with the U.S. coming in with 233 machines on the list. But, as Science notes, that is nearing all-time low.
