The First-Year Studies program is partnering with Cristina Henriquez, the author of this year’s Life of the Mind book, The Book of Unknown Americans, and inviting the Knoxville community to participate in “The Unknown Americans Project” on Tumblr. The aim of the project is to shed light on the often untold stories of immigrants in America.

First-Year Studies is hoping to start a campus- and community-wide dialogue about the immigrant experience in Knoxville and how Volunteers can stay connected to their origins while on campus. If you, or someone you know, would like to contribute a story to this active Tumblr project, send a short story (no more than 400 words) and a photo of yourself, your family, or the place you’re writing about to unknownamericans@cristinahenriquez.com. Be sure to include “Knoxville Unknown Americans” in the subject line.

Visit the Unknown Americans Tumblr to read others’ stories and keep an eye out for your story in early August. Read more about Henriquez’s novel, The Book of Unknown Americans, on the Life of the Mind website.
