Traffic ConesWork on the Cumberland Avenue Corridor project will result in road closures and towing of illegally parked vehicles starting this week.

To ease traffic flow during the project, side streets near Cumberland Avenue are being converted from one-way to two-way traffic.

Four streets will become two-way Eighteenth Street, Nineteenth Street south of Cumberland Avenue, Mountcastle Street, and Twenty-first Street south of Cumberland Avenue.

Starting Tuesday, June 23, these side streets will be resurfaced and restriped for two-way traffic. Any vehicles parked illegally in the new traffic lanes will be towed to the City of Knoxville’s Vehicle Impoundment Lot on Vice Mayor Jack Sharp Road.

In addition, the entrance to the University Commons shopping center from Cumberland Avenue is closed until Thursday, June 25, while construction crews connect stormwater quality devices with the Cumberland Avenue stormwater line. University Commons will remain accessible from Joe Johnson Drive via Neyland Drive.

The one open westbound lane of Cumberland Avenue between University Commons and West Volunteer Boulevard will close at 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 26. The intersection will be completely closed until noon Monday, June 29, when the westbound lane reopens. Also during the closure, the main entrance to the Kingston Pike Building will be closed. The building can be accessed via Concord Street at Tyson Park.
