Campus Invited to Hydraulics and Sedimentation Laboratory Opening

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is hosting an open house Tuesday, May 12, for its new state-of-the-art Hydraulics and Sedimentation Laboratory, one of the most advanced in the country and one of the few in the Southeast.

Located near Parking Services at 2021 Stephenson Drive, the new facility has an expanded research capability that will enable collaborations within the university and with researchers at peer institutions, state and federal agencies, and businesses.

The lab features two tractor-trailer-sized water flumes, a rain station, sedimentary tools and gauges, and about seventy-five other pieces of lab equipment that help it study everything from farm runoff and bridge erosion to dam safety and the health of rivers.

The group has received numerous grants from NASA, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and the US Departments of Energy, Transportation, Agriculture, and Defense.

The open house begins at 9:00 a.m., and light refreshments will be served.

Reservations can be made by contacting Samantha Allen at HSL@utk.edu or by calling 865-974-7727.
