UT Parking and Transit Services has made some changes to parking to help accommodate student, faculty, and staff needs and to help make navigating around campus construction easier.
All faculty, staff, and students need a current UT parking permit to utilize campus lots. Students can purchase their permit online by visiting the Parking and Transit Services website. The permit will arrive in the mail but students will receive a temporary permit (PDF) with their receipt.
All students, faculty, and staff should ensure their temporary permit or hangtag is properly displayed. Enforcement of all parking areas will begin the first full week of classes.
Commuter Students
Peak hours for all parking on campus are 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Commuters are encouraged to arrive early and ride the T bus to their class or desired location on campus. The larger garages, G10 on Neyland Drive, the 11th Street Garage, and the White Avenue garage fill up early in the day.
Parking and Transit Services encourages commuters to become familiar with the less-utilized lots like GF2 and GF3 on Todd Helton Drive, behind Fraternity Park, which are available to commuters from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. weekdays. Other less-utilized commuter lots are C-15, which is located off Neyland Drive to the east of the John D. Tickle Engineering Building; the staff and commuter lot at the Kingston Pike Building; and the shared commuter parking in the N-15 parking area on the corner of Lake Avenue and Volunteer Boulevard West.
The C-18 Poplar Street Lot, across from the Knoxville Convention Center on the Henley Street side, offers 100 spaces for commuters on most weekdays. Another 150 spaces are available in the adjoining Church Street United Methodist lot, C-26, on weekdays.
Five hundred spaces have also been converted to commuter spaces in the Lake Avenue Garage (C-7).
The White Avenue Garage (C-21) has reduced 200 commuter spaces to accommodate the reopening of Clement Hall and the need for additional residential (non-commuter) parking. The C-10 parking lot on Pat Head Summitt has closed through the fall semester to accommodate construction.
The Student Aquatic Center (SAC) parking lot has been renamed RecSports Parking Area (RPA). This lot requires a current staff or student commuter permit. Students attending classes or persons having other business on campus may not park in the RecSports Parking Area. More information can be found on the RecSports website.
Non-Commuters (Residential Students)
Four hundred spaces have been added to the White Avenue Garage (N-4) for residential students who live in the Clement, Laurel, and Vol halls. A new gravel lot (N-6A) has been added on the east side of the Lake Avenue Garage (N-6).
More non-commuter parking has also been added on the west side of Lake Avenue; they are lots N-10, N-12, and N-16.
Approximately 200 non-commuter spaces have been eliminated in N-3, which is located on the west side and behind Apartment Residence Hall, due to the closure and demolition of the building.
Faculty/Staff
The C-24 lot beside the Early Learning Center has been converted to staff lot S-7.
The previous staff lot (S-7), to the west side of the Jessie Harris Building, is now closed to accommodate construction, but the White Avenue Garage (S-12) now has additional staff spots. The C-15 commuter lot, which is located off Neyland Drive to the east of the John D. Tickle Engineering Building, now provides parking for staff.
About 200 spaces were eliminated from the White Avenue Garage but more parking was added to the Lake Avenue Garage. Staff 37 permits can also be used in the Lake Avenue Garage.
Ride the T
The T transit system resumes its full route schedule on Monday, August 17, offering four fixed routes, the accessible van service, and the T Link. There are no changes to campus routes, but a new route has been added to serve the Pellissippi Community College’s Hardin Valley campus and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Passengers must show their UT ID to ride to Pellissippi. Those traveling to ORNL must also have appropriate ORNL credentials in order to travel from Pellissippi to ORNL.

Students, faculty, and staff can download the UT app and use the Transit feature on the main page to see the location and route of the T in their vicinity, watch the T move in real time, check the arrival predictions for the T approaching a specific stop, and set an alert that tells them when their specified T bus is approaching.
The Transit feature will also offer Safe Ride for the first time this year. Safe Ride is an on-demand passenger trip request system with which students can send a request via a mobile device and will receive a text when their ride is near. The UT app is available for download through ITunes and Google Play.
The UT app also has a feature called Parker, which allows students, faculty, and staff to view all of the parking locations across campus. Click on a parking area within the app to find out its hours of operation, details about who can park in that lot or garage, and basic regulations of that parking area.
Parking and Transit Services also partners with Zipcar, the nation’s leading car-sharing program. Students can register to reserve a self-service, on-demand car online or on their phone for as short as an hour or as long as four days. Their vehicles are now located in the RecSports Parking Area. Future Parking
A new parking garage at the former site of Stokely Athletic Center will offer 1,000 spaces for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The garage is scheduled to open in August 2016.
Construction will begin this spring on a 1,000-space garage on Lake Avenue. The project is set to finish in August 2017.
