Two women ambassadors will be featured in separate lectures as part of this year’s Ashe Distinguished Lecture Series sponsored by the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy.
Hunaina Sultan Ahmed Al-Mughairy, Oman’s ambassador to the United States, will speak about Oman-US relations on Tuesday, April 7. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Toyota Auditorium at the Baker Center. The event is free and open to the public.
Al-Mughairy, who has worked in various governmental capacities for Oman since 1973, was appointed ambassador in 2005 and has focused much of her energy on improving relations between the United States and Oman. She is a strong advocate for the US-Oman Free Trade Agreement.
Prior to her appointment as ambassador, she served in several positions related to commerce and industry, including representative of the Omani Center for Investment Promotion and Export Development.
Al-Mughairy has a bachelor’s degree in business communications from the Politechnical Institute in Cairo and a master’s degree in economics from New York University. Her husband, Fuad Mubarak al-Hinai, has been Oman’s ambassador to the United Nations since August 1998.
Deborah Jones, US ambassador to Libya, will address US-Libya relations during the second Ashe lecture on April 21.
The Ashe Distinguished Lecture series is part of the Baker Center’s leadership and governance policy program and is supported by former ambassador and Knoxville mayor Victor Ashe. Ambassadors and mayors are invited to speak on a variety of public policy matters, including foreign relations, diplomacy, world affairs, and local government.
