A music professor and her ensemble will perform at New York’s famous Carnegie Hall next month. They’ll give East Tennesseans a preview of that concert on Tuesday, March 24.
The concert, Tennessee to Carnegie: New Music for Clarinet, Viola and Piano, will take place at 6:00 p.m. in the Sandra G. Powell Recital Hall of the Natalie L. Haslam Music Center.
It will feature violist Hillary Herndon, a UT music assistant professor; clarinetist Jeremy Reynolds, a faculty member at the University of Denver; and pianist Wei-Chun Bernadette Lo, a faculty member at Sewanee: The University of the South. Together they make up the Waldland Ensemble. Herndon established the group in 2013.
The ensemble will perform five new commissioned works that were written for the group, including a piece by Grammy Award–winning composer Libby Larsen. The works feature an intergenerational mix of composers, from the well-established to the next generation of emerging artists.
Larsen and composers Kenji Bunch, Anthony Constantino, Michael Kimber, and Dana Wilson have collectively written two clarinet and viola duos and three piano, clarinet, and viola trios for the “American Voices: New Music for Clarinet, Viola and Piano” program that the Waldland Ensemble will perform throughout United States, Europe, and Africa this year.
“It is extremely rare to hear a program of entirely new chamber music by award-winning composers,” Herndon said. “The commission of these pieces represents a wealth of new music for clarinet, viola, and piano and was made possible only through great support from organizations and individuals across the country, including the University of Tennessee, Sewanee University, and the Tennessee Arts Commission.”
The Waldland Ensemble will make their Carnegie Hall debut on April 7.
