morgancropIf you’re stressing over tax season, UT law students may be able to help you breathe a little easier. As part of the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, UT Law students will offer free tax preparation help to members of the community, including UT staff members.

The VITA program offers free tax help and electronic filing to people who generally make $53,000 or less, persons with disabilities, the elderly, and limited-English-speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. The UT Law students who provide assistance are certified by the IRS following a training program and a review of IRS forms and procedures.

“Not only does this program provide a great service to the community, but it also provides our students with valuable experiential and service learning,” said Brad Morgan, associate director of the College of Law’s Institute for Professional Leadership, who oversees VITA at UT Law. “They interact directly with individuals, identify the important issues and documents involved in tax preparation, and deliver a professional service that aids taxpayers.”

The program begins today and runs through Wednesday, April 15. Services will be provided in Suite 157 of the College of Law (1505 West Cumberland Avenue, Knoxville) on Wednesdays and Thursdays, 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. Public parking is available in the Volunteer Hall garage, located directly behind the College of Law, on White Avenue. Appointments are not necessary.
