This week, UT is celebrating its faculty members’ trailblazing efforts in classrooms, laboratories, and the community during our sixth annual Faculty Appreciation Week.
“People make our university what it is,” Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek said. “Provost Susan D. Martin and I want to thank our faculty members for their dedication and hard work.
“We also want to acknowledge how their efforts have helped us win significant recent accolades, including the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities’ Trailblazer award and the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification for outreach efforts.
“With the great strides we’ve made and the promise of more to come, it’s an exciting time to be part of the Volunteer family.”
Several special events will be held this week.
Today, the Tennessee Teaching and Learning Center and the Provost’s Office will host a luncheon presentation, “Innovations in Teaching: It’s Not Your Average Classroom,” featuring two faculty members who have engaged their students through innovative projects.
Joy Radice, associate professor of law, recruited actors from the Department of Theatre to make a criminal case, the fictitious State v. Jones, come to life for her first-year law students.
Nick Geidner, assistant professor of journalism and electronic media, directed the Medal of Honor Project, an award-winning service-learning collaboration between the School of Journalism and Electronic Media and the 2014 Medal of Honor Convention.

- Thursday— Women’s basketball vs. Alabama, 7:00 p.m. Visit uttix.com and use promo code VOLS4UTK for $7 tickets.
- Friday— The Department of Psychology and the Tennessee Teaching and Learning Center will host a breakfast presentation, “Going Behind the Scenes of Learning: Practicing the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning,” by Regan Gurung, a noted education and psychology expert from the University of Wisconsin. The event begins at 8:30 a.m. in the University Center Crest Room. It is free, but seating is limited. Please register to attend.
- March 5—In an extension of Faculty Appreciation Week, the McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture will host a wine and hors d’oeuvres reception and tours of the Drawn from the McClung exhibit from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Please register to attend.
The Faculty Appreciation Week website— utk.edu/shoutout—will feature daily stories about trailblazing faculty members and more information about discounts for faculty and staff, courtesy of Vol Shop, UT Dining/Aramark, and the McClung Museum.
The website also provides several ways to leave thank-you messages for faculty members and read what others have shared.
Faculty, staff, students, alumni, and others can leave a “shout out” on the page and also post thank-you messages or a selfies with favorite faculty members on their Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook page with the hashtag #UTFaculty.
