Pregame Showcase Focuses on 17th Century Finance Schemes in Rome

Art history professor Dottie Habel will take football fans on a journey back to Rome during her Pregame Showcase presentation on Saturday at UT.

Habel will present “Financing Urban Redevelopment in Seventeenth-Century Rome” at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday prior to the Vols’ game against UT Chattanooga.

Now in its twenty-fifth season, the Pregame Showcase, sponsored by UT Knoxville Alumni Affairs and UT Athletics, gives fans the chance to hear from esteemed faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences prior to each gridiron matchup.

Free and open to the public, each showcase features a thirty-minute presentation followed by a fifteen-minute question-and-answer session. Presentations begin two hours before kickoff in the ballroom (Room 213) of the Carolyn P. Brown University Center. A brief reception with the speaker will be held immediately following each program. A door prize is awarded.

Habel’s presentation will focus on a financing scheme for downtown Rome concocted by Marco Giovanni Stefano in the mid-seventeenth century. Studying Stefano’s financing scheme offers insight to real estate financing, the bond market, and matters of urban ownership, both then and now.

Here’s the lineup for the rest of the season:

Oct. 25—”Play Throughout the Animal World.” Gordon M. Burghardt, Alumni Distinguished Service Professor of psychology and ecology and evolutionary biology, will explore the importance of play to humans and animals.

Nov. 15—”Expanding the Synthetic Toolbox for Pharmaceuticals.” David M. Jenkins, associate professor of chemistry, will look at how man-made chemicals can be used to make medicine.

Nov. 22—”Let’s Play! Shakespeare for Civilians.” Kathleen S. Buckley, associate professor of theatre, will host a Shakespeare workshop with audience participation.
