Recent UT College of Law graduates fare better than law graduates nationwide when it comes to being employed in full-time jobs requiring bar passage.
UT law graduates are also more likely than their counterparts nationwide to be employed in private practice law firms.
Those are among the results in a recent survey of Class of 2013 law school graduates nationwide by the American Bar Association. The report, released earlier this month, looks at employment outcomes for the most recent graduates of ABA-approved law schools as of February 15, 2014, nine months after spring 2013 graduation.
Here’s how UT graduates shape up:
- 65.3 percent of UT’s 2013 graduates are in long-term, full-time positions that require bar passage. That compares to only 57 percent of law graduates nationwide.
- 53.3 percent of UT’s 2013 graduates are employed in private practice law firms. That compares to 41.6 percent of recent law graduates nationwide.
- Only 4.8 percent of UT’s 2013 law graduates are unemployed and seeking employment; 11.2 percent of recent law graduates nationwide are on the job hunt.
“This just goes to show how well UT Law prepares our students to find and secure great jobs right out of law school, especially in private practice where positions are highly competitive,” said Doug Blaze, dean of the College of Law. “Our graduates are able to walk away with an excellent legal education and start their careers off on the right foot.”
The College of Law had 167 graduates in 2013. Employment information is known about 97.6 percent of them.
The ABA survey is the latest in a series of positive reports about the College of Law and its graduates.
Last month, the College of Law ranked thirty-fourth on the National Law Journal‘s most recent “Go-To Law Schools” list, which ranks the top fifty law schools by the percentage of 2013 graduates who landed jobs at the country’s largest law firms. UT was among twenty law schools that outperformed their U.S. News and World Report rankings because of their graduates’ success in being hired at one of the country’s 250 top law firms as ranked by the National Law Journal.
The college ranked thirty-second among America’s public universities and sixty-first among all public and private law programs in the “Best Law Schools 2014” list, and its specialty in clinical training is seventh among public universities and seventeenth among all universities by U.S. News and World Report. It also has been named the eighth most efficient law school by U.S. News.
The American Bar Association is one of the largest voluntary professional membership organizations in the world.
