Summer break is just around the corner, but learning doesn’t have to stop just because school is out. UT offers several fun and interesting summer camps that keep kids active and learning.

Junior Leadership Institute
Dates: June 2–6

4–H Camps

Electric Camp
Dates: June 24–27
Grades: 6–7
Location: University of Tennessee, Knoxville
Cost: $235

This fee includes the cost of meals, lodging, field trips, insurance, program, etc. Transportation fees are covered by members of the Tennessee Electric Cooperative Association.

Target SMART Camp
Dates: June 30–July 3
Grades: 5–12
Location: W.P. Ridley 4-H Center, Columbia, Tennessee
Cost: $240

Other Camps

4-H also offers Junior 4-H Camps for grades 4 through 6. The five-day residential camps, held at various sites around the state, include swimming, golfing, music, group sports, and hiking.

4-H Adventure Camps, for grades 6 through 8, are for held at various sites around the state and offer activities like mock archaeological digs, fishing, tubing, nature hikes, canoeing, swimming, and survivor challenges.

Architecture and Design

Design Matters Camp
Dates: July 13–18
Grades: High school
Location: Art and Architecture Building
Cost: $985

Offers high school students an introduction to the design of the built environment and the considerations that shape it. The setting, curriculum, and instruction also provide the opportunity to experience life as a design student on a university campus for one week. Curiosity is the sole prerequisite; previous architecture or design experience is not necessary. Visit the College of Architecture and Design for more information.

McClung Museum Camps

Archaeokids: Exploring Ancient Art and Archaeology
Dates: June 23–27
Time: 9:00 a.m.–noon
Grades: 4–6
Location: McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture
Cost: $110 per child; $99 per child for museum members

Campers will explore archaeology, artifacts, ancient art, and technology, including the culture of ancient Egyptians and ancient Native Americans. Activities include making pottery and jewelry, hunting with a spear thrower, making a mummy mask, and learning basic archaeology. All materials and a snack are included.

Dig it! Fun with Fossils
Dates: July 14–19
Time: 1:00–4:00 p.m.
Grades: 4–6
Location: McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture
Cost: $110 per child; $99 per child for museum members

Campers will learn about dinosaurs, woolly mammoths, mosasaurs, and other extinct animals in the field of paleontology. Activities include handling and examining real fossils, including bones, teeth, tracks, and dinosaur eggshell; making molds and casts; and excavating. All materials and a snack are included.

Clarence Brown Theatre Summer Acting Workshop
Session 1: June 16–27
Session 2: July 21–August 1

Participants will have classes in acting technique, scene study, voice and movement, and musical theatre.
