The UT Amnesty International chapter will celebrate its fourth annual Human Rights Week March 24 through 27. The week will feature speakers and movies with topics ranging from abuse in the military to food justice to medical activism. All events are free and open to the public.
This year’s lineup includes:
- The Invisible War, in the Hodges Library Auditorium, 1015 Volunteer Boulevard, at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, March 24. The 2012 Academy Award–nominated documentary features interviews with veterans from multiple branches of the US Armed Forces who recount the events surrounding their assaults.
- “Food Justice as a Human Right,” in the International House Great Room, 1623 Melrose Place, at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25. Graduate student Sylvia Duluc-Silva from the Department of Sociology will discuss food deserts, food justice movements in the United States, and community activism in east Knoxville. Food from local venders will be provided.
- “Medical Activism with Remote Area Medical,” at 7:00 p.m. in the University Center Shiloh Room, 1502 Cumberland Avenue, on Thursday, March 27. Laura Kirschenmann, volunteer director of Remote Area Medical, will talk about the nonprofit’s initiatives and how to get involved. Remote Area Medical is a medical relief corps that provides free health care, dental care, eye care, veterinary services, and technical and educational assistance to people in remote areas of the United States and around the world.
The week’s events are sponsored by the campus chapter of Amnesty International, Issues Committee, Oxfam America Club at UT, Project V.E.G.G.I.E., Global Medical Training, Lambda Student Union, and the departments of Anthropology, Political Science, and Sociology.
