The Volapalooza 2014 lineup is here, and Fitz and The Tantrums with The Dirty Guv’nahs and The Delta Saints will perform at this year’s concert.
Headliners Fitz and The Tantrums are an American neo-soul and indie pop band from Los Angeles with popular songs including “The Walker,” “Out of My League,” and “MoneyGrabber.”
UT alums The Dirty Guv’nahs are an American roots rock band from Knoxville and will be joining Fitz and The Tantrums for the concert. The Delta Saints, a Nashville-based rock band, will open the show.
Volapalooza is a concert that celebrates the end of the semester and school year, as well as an invitation to de-stress before end of the year finals. This annual tradition provides a reward and escape for students who need a break.
The Central Programming Council Volapalooza Event Planners committee takes many steps to ensure the event features musicians who have something to offer the diverse makeup of the university. The members conduct artist research, which includes listening to artists’ studio albums; watching videos of live performances; considering price range, artists’ popularity, and reception on social media; and many other factors.
The committee is dedicated to representing the student body, and they offer a survey every year asking students their favorite genres and which artists they would like to see featured at the event. The committee reviews this information while considering all the other factors. Taylor Fuller, public relations chair of the Volapalooza Event Planners, says they strive to find the right balance.
The next process involves contacting agents, setting budgets and schedules, contracting artists, and finalizing the list. While sometimes this process prevents favored artists from joining the lineup, Fuller says the committee always ends up with artists they are pleased with.
Volapalooza takes place on the last day of classes, April 25, in Thompson-Boling Arena. Student tickets are $5 and general admission is $25.
