About 500 UT students will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Saturday, January 18, by attending a leadership conference and working on service projects around the Knoxville community.
Hosted by UT’s Center for Leadership and Service, the Clifton M. Jones Student Leadership Conference and MLK Day of Service will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Carolyn P. Brown Memorial University Center.
The morning includes keynote speaker Steve Whitby. A storyteller, Whitby conveys critical lessons about student leadership and human potential through stories of normal people facing extraordinary opportunities.
There will be three sessions with more than thirty-five different programs and speakers focusing on five different topics: servant leadership and social change, growing in leadership, leading in a diverse world, creating your leadership brand, and impact careers and professional leadership.
For the first time, the event will include an involvement fair, giving students the chance to interact with twenty-four different student organizations and community agencies with similar interests in bettering the campus and greater community.
Then, from 3:15 to 5:00 p.m., the students will split into groups and work on service projects with twenty community agencies across Knoxville, including Manorhouse Assisted Living, the Knoxville Zoo, the Love Kitchen, and Knoxville Botanical Garden and Arboretum.
Members of the media are invited to photograph students during the day of service activities between 3:30 and 4:00 p.m. at the Love Kitchen, 2418 Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue.
