Artist Richard Meier, who is also one of the world’s most celebrated architects, will exhibit his artwork this fall at UT’s Ewing Gallery of Art and Architecture, alongside collages selected from the International Collage Center.
The exhibits, “Richard Meier: Selected Collage Works” and “Remix: Selections from the International Collage Center” will open with a 6:30 p.m. reception on Monday, November 4, in the Ewing Gallery, 1715 Volunteer Boulevard.
“Richard Meier: Selected Collage Works” is a presentation of twenty recent works that are a collaboration between Meier and master printer Gary Lichtenstein. The images consist of eleven color silkscreens of original Meier collages, including some with drawings on the prints.
Meier is winner of numerous awards, including the Pritzker Prize, architecture’s highest honor, and the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal.
From November 4 to December 9, Meier’s works will be displayed along with those of 100 other prominent artists on loan from the collage center, an organization dedicated to the research and presentation of collage as both a cultural and aesthetic narrative.
The “Remix” exhibit explores the impact of collage on artistic and cultural expression and brings together the diverse fragments of rich artistic traditions.
The exhibits are funded by the UT School of Art and the Robert B. Church III Lecture Series, an educational resource of the College of Architecture and Design that presents lectures, exhibits, and films that address contemporary design issues.
Three special events will accompany the exhibit:
- 5:30 p.m., November 4, McCarty Auditorium: Pavel Zoubok, founder of the Collage Center, will present a history of collage in his lecture “Collage Culture: From Picasso to Facebook.”
- Noon, November 5, Ewing Gallery: Panel discussion on collage featuring UT faculty members Deb Shmerler of graphic design and Brian Ambroziak of architecture. It also will include special guests Pavel Zoubok; Andrew McLellan, project manager at Weber Fox Murphy in Charlotte, North Carolina; and Jennifer Shields, visiting assistant professor at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, School of Architecture. Shields recently completed her first book, Collage and Architecture.
- 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., November 16, Room 113, Art and Architecture Building: Collage workshop with artist Jean Hess. Participants will learn about different collage media and techniques, with an emphasis on paint, layered pigments, and clear resins in the collage process. Each attendee will complete a finished work. A registration fee of $20 and e-mail registration to ewing@utk.edu are required to participate.
