Big Orange Big IdeasIf it wasn’t for one UT graduate, we might not have the personal computer. Mark Dean, a 1979 graduate in electrical engineering, had the big idea of developing technology that allows us to plug almost anything into computers and have the devices and PCs communicate seamlessly. This idea allowed the personal computer to become such a big part of our lives.

Dean was one of the lead inventors of the personal computer and until recently, was chief technology officer for IBM Middle East and Africa. He joined the College of Engineering faculty this fall.
