Earth Month Kicks off Green Events on Campus

 

Make Orange GreenThis week marks the beginning of Earth Month at UT.

Celebrating its seventh year, Earth Month encourages environmental awareness, conservation, and sustainable practices to the campus community. The month-long event is celebrated across the globe and UT is excited to participate, offering events and activities that are both fun and interactive.

Join the Office of Sustainability and campus organizations to Make Orange Green this Earth Month. For a full list of events visit environment.utk.edu.

April 2
Go Green Fair and Bike to Campus Day
10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Pedestrian Walkway
Come to the Earth Month kickoff event showcasing environmental organizations from campus and the Knoxville community.

April 5
Bike to First Friday
5:30 p.m., UT Seal on the Pedestrian Walkway
Experience local art and businesses while supporting alternative transportation! Meet at the UT seal to bike to Market Square for First Friday.

April 6
River Rescue
10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., various locations across Knoxville
Help with the twenty-fourth annual river and creek cleanup at more than forty sites in and around Knoxville. Contact Ijams Nature Center at 865-577-4717, extension124, to sign up and volunteer.

April 9–10
Energy Series
8:00 p.m., University Center Room 223
Join SPEAK to discuss our energy future and climate change. On Tuesday the film Switch will be shown, and on Wednesday the Dirty Energy Road Show will be coming to town.

April 11
Recycling Center Tour
11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Hodges Library second-floor entrance
Have you ever wanted to know where your plastic bottle goes after you put it in the recycling bin? Take a tour of Rock-Tenn Recycling Center. Register in advance.

April 11
Baker Center Energy and Environment Forum
3:30 to 5:00 p.m., Min H. Kao Room 404
Paulina Oliva, assistant professor in the Department of Economics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, will speak about pollution and human health in developing and developed countries.

April 18
“Living Light” Tour
noon, Living Light, UT Gardens
Tour the “Living Light” house and learn about the efficiency behind the attractive 750-square-foot home. A group will meet at Hodges Library second-floor entrance at 11:30 a.m. to walk to the Ag campus and start the tour at noon. Register in advance at environment.utk.edu.

April 19
Earth Day Celebration
10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Circle Park
Celebrate Earth Day with the Environmental Leadership Awards Ceremony, SPEAK’s Celebration, and other activities.

April 20
EarthFest
10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Pellissippi State Community College
EarthFest is a free zero-waste event with food, fun and entertainment. Visit the EarthFest website for more information.

April 23
Sustainability Career Workshop
4:00 p.m., Career Services
Shawna Hembree, assistant director in Career Services, will discuss how to tailor your resume and other tips for a future career in sustainability.
