NICS Study Reveals How to Control Plasma

A study led by Predrag Krstic at National Institute of Computational Sciences (NICS) has uncovered how the behavior of plasma—the extremely hot gases of nuclear fusion—can be controlled with ultra-thin lithium films on graphite walls lining thermonuclear magnetic fusion devices. Using the power of supercomputers Jaguar and Kraken, Krstic’s team has found that seemingly insignificant lithium depositions can profoundly influence the behavior fusion plasmas.
