Last spring, one of UT’s global studies students decided to take her major to the next level—by studying in Gaborone, Botswana.
Liza Musick, a senior in global studies and political science, spent the spring semester of 2012 at the University of Botswana taking classes like Politics of Poverty in Southern Africa and Environmental Policy.
Now a peer advisor in the Programs Abroad Office, Musick and other students who have studied abroad will be available to talk about their experiences at the Spring 2013 Study Abroad Fair to be held from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 23, in the University Center Ballroom.
While abroad, Musick used her spare time to travel around Botswana and parts of South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. She went on safaris in the Okavanga Delta, which has one of the world’s largest elephant populations.
However, Musick said she learned the most about African culture from her day-to-day life there.
“I learned so much about the world around me, and even more about myself and my identity as world citizen,” she said. “This deep understanding of a culture can only come with an extended and immersed stay, which is exactly what study abroad gives you.”
At the study abroad fair, interested students can learn about semester-long, year-long, summer, and mini-term study abroad programs. There also will be information about summer internships.
Faculty members who lead summer and mini-term programs will be on hand to answer questions. Students can find out more about scholarships and how to use financial aid for a study abroad program.
Students can also visit with peer advisors in the Programs Abroad Office any time throughout the year to learn more about studying abroad. They are available from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, in the Programs Abroad Office resource room. Daily informational meetings are held at 2:00 p.m.
