In Memoriam: James M. Buchanan

 

UT alumnus James M. Buchanan, a scholar and author who won the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 1986, passed away Wednesday at the age of 93.

Originally from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, James attended Middle Tennessee State Teachers College, now known as Middle Tennessee State University, and went on to earn a master’s in business administration from UT in 1941. He received his doctorate from the University of Chicago and returned to UT to teach in the Department of Economics from 1948 to 1951. Buchanan also gave the keynote speech at the investiture ceremony of former UT System President Wade Gilley in 1999.
