KNOXVILLE—The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, campus teemed with aspiring high school scientists last weekend during the annual Tennessee Science Olympiad State Tournament.
Thirty-six middle and high school teams from across the state competed in the event held on April 14 to determine the state’s preeminent science scholars. Teams from Knoxville and Nashville took top honors.
More than a hundred UT faculty and students served as coordinators and judges for the twenty-three academic events. Teams battled in a broad range of scientific and engineering disciplines such as robotics, forensics, epidemiology, remote sensing, meteorology, and protein modeling. Competitions included exams, building events, and laboratory exercises.
Students from Cedar Springs Home School Group in Knoxville won the middle school division. Students from Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville won the high school division.
The first-place winners received trophies, medals, and financial support to compete in the twenty-eighth annual Science Olympiad National Tournament, May 18-19, at Central Florida University in Orlando.
Second-place winners included Bearden Middle School in Knoxville and White Station High School in Memphis. Third-place winners included Ross N. Robinson Middle School in Kingsport and Harpeth Hall High School in Nashville.
The 2012 state tournament was sponsored by the UT College of Arts and Sciences with support from the UT-Oak Ridge National Laboratory Science Alliance, the College of Engineering, and the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences.
