Bain StewartFormer UT English professor and department head Bain Stewart died Saturday, January 21, at the age of 96. Stewart came to UT in 1940 when John Hodges was the department head and retired in 1985—a forty-five year career that was interrupted only by service in World War II. A scholar and teacher of Renaissance literature, he also served as director of freshman English for a number of years before taking on a five-year term as department head from 1971 to 1976. A burial service was held yesterday at Tazewell Irish Cemetery in Knoxville. Condolences may be registered here.
