KNOXVILLE — WUTK 90.3 FM “The Rock,” the University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s student-run modern rock radio station, was named as the station showing “Biggest Improvement” in the 2011 College Radio Awards, sponsored by the College Music Journal (CMJ) and held last weekend in New York City.

This is the first CMJ award for WUTK, which won national recognition as the runner-up for “College Station of the Year” in the 2010 MTVU Woodie Awards and was named one of the “Forty Best Little Radio Stations in America” by Paste Magazine in 2010.

WUTK, which is operated by the School of Journalism and Electronic Media, also has been voted “Knoxville’s Best Radio Station” for six years in a row by readers of Metro Pulse, Knoxville’s weekly alternative newspaper.

“This CMJ award is a real tribute to the hard work that so many of our students have put in to this station,” said Benny Smith, WUTK general manager. “They are learning about programming and managing a radio station by doing the hands-on work, while providing Knoxville and East Tennessee with music that you can’t find anywhere else. We are all very proud of the award and the recognition from our industry peers.”

The station gives students a chance to gain valuable experience in radio broadcasting, the music industry, and entertainment promotions. More than a hundred UT students participate in the station each semester.
