UT Cinema Studies Program Hosts Documentary Filmmaker Today

The UT Knoxville Cinema Studies program is hosting the screening of two documentaries by filmmaker Hap Kindem, starting at 3:45 p.m. today in Hodges Library Auditorium.

Kindem, an award-winning documentary filmmaker, will introduce two of his documentary films, More than Meets the Eye and Winning Isn’t Everything.

The event is free and open to the public.

More than Meets the Eye profiles Anne-Metta Brehdal, a Danish woman blinded in her early twenties, who has gone on to win two Special Olympics gold medals in cross-country skiing and biathalon (an event which combines speed in skiing and accuracy in shooting). She is also the first visually impaired person in Denmark to earn an advanced degree in clinical psychology.

Winning Isn’t Everything: the Untold Story of a Soccer Dynasty provides a behind-the-scenes look at the University of North Carolina’s women’s soccer team throughout the 2007 season, as well as the end of the 2008 season. Kindem, a film professor at the University of North Carolina, was given unprecedented access to the team’s practices, games, and meetings thanks to the cooperation of Anson Dorrance, the Pat Summitt of women’s soccer. The team struggles to respond to Coach Dorrance’s motivational strategies and uphold the NCAA dynasty at UNC, established by people like Mia Hamm and Tennessee soccer coach Ange Kelly. As the promotional material suggests, “along the way they discover that winning isn’t everything.”

The screenings will last about ninety minutes, after which Kindem will answer questions about the movies and documentary filmmaking.

A reception catered by The Tomato Head will follow in the library’s Mary Greer Room on the second floor of Hodges Library.

Additional sponsors of the event include the College of Communication and Information, and the departments of English, modern foreign languages and literatures, and sociology.
