Roger Stephens

A celebration of the life of Roger Stephens, director of the University of Tennessee School of Music, will be held Tuesday, September 6.

Faculty, staff, students, and community members are invited to the tribute, which will include remembrances and musical reflections.

The 7:30 p.m. event will be in the James R. Cox Auditorium in the Alumni Memorial Building.

Mr. Stephens, 67, who directed the school of music from 2001 to 2011, died in February after a seven-year battle with cancer. He was instrumental in securing funds for the school’s new building.

He was present for the groundbreaking of the Natalie L. Haslam Music Center in November. The new building will feature many of his ideas about the design.

He traditionally sang the national anthem for commencements and at other UT events.

Mr. Stephens held leadership roles at UT Knoxville, Ohio State University, and Ohio University. He was a native of Springfield, Ohio.

Free parking in the University Center parking garage will be available for guests who attend the tribute.
