KNOXVILLE – Sports, fitness, and wellness will be the focus of this year’s Alumni Summer College at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Alumni and friends will explore the world of athletics, learn about healthy living, and delve into the psychology of sports during the week. Participants do not have to be UT alumni.
The Alumni Summer College will take place July 13-17, with a one-day trip to Abingdon, Virginia, on Saturday, July 16.
The program begins with dinner and a keynote lecture by UT alumnus Charles Davis, former Tennessee Volunteers football player and now lead analyst for Fox Sports. Davis served as co-director of the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and as assistant football coach for the University of the Pacific. He is a lead analyst for Fox college football coverage, an analyst for the National Football League (NFL) Network, and, for the last two seasons, covered the NFL on Fox with Dick Stockton.
UT faculty and staff, as well as physicians from UT Medical Center (UTMC), will lecture on their areas of research and expertise on Thursday and Friday.
Lecture topics include:
- “Sport Psychology at Tennessee” by Craig Wrisberg, professor of sport psychology
- “Eating for a Healthy Heart” by Janet Seiber, cardiac nurse specialist and dietitian, and Jane Kelly, of the UTMC Healthy Living Kitchen
- “Behind the Scenes: Lady Vols Sports Medicine” by Jenny Moshak, associate athletic director for sports medicine
- “What to Do if You Have a Heart Attack” Tijuan L. Overly, cardiologist and clinical assistant professor of cardiology
- “History of SEC Football” by Mark Windham, professor of entomology and plant pathology; Windham leads a freshman seminar class on this topic.
Barbara Dooley, mother of UT football coach Derek Dooley, will speak during Thursday’s dinner. Dooley is an author, radio, and television personality who will share about life experiences during her talk, “Living, Loving, and Laughing.”
Participants will tour campus locations such as the newly renovated Ayres Hall, Neyland Stadium, and Thompson Boling Assembly Center and Arena. The Saturday trip to Abingdon includes lunch at the Martha Washington Inn and a performance of Beauty and the Beast at the Barter Theatre.
The registration fee is $350, which includes the Saturday trip and selected meals. Lodging is the responsibility of the participant, although rooms are reserved at a discounted rate at the Knoxville Crowne Plaza until June 13. Deadline to register for the program is June 29.
