UT Knoxville is in its final week of Recyclemania and has overtaken its opponent Florida in per-capita recycling. To date, UT Knoxville has recycled a cumulative total of 7.89 pounds per person, while Florida has recycled a cumulative total of 7.36 pounds per person.

RecycleMania is an eight-week competition among more than 630 college and university recycling programs representing 6 million students and more than 1.5 million staff and faculty that kicked off Feb. 6. This year UT Knoxville’s recycling program has decided to take on Florida in an effort to recycle more than the Gators.

“If we can hold out strong, we’ll beat Florida in this competition! I’ll do everything I can to have a banner week this week. I’d like to really encourage big clean-outs this week. I’d hate to lose to them if they make a big run at the end,” said environmental coordinator Jay Price.

The competition ends Friday, April 1st with the Recyclympics competition. To view a video of last year’s Recyclympics, click here.

Price encourages everyone to take 5 minutes to look through old files, catalogs and magazines and put any you don’t need in the blue recycling bin at your desk, classroom or nearby hallway.

If you need help cleaning out a big closet, need extra bins, or item pick-up, contact Price at recycle@utk.edu or 974-3480.
