Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek and the UT Knoxville Commission for Women want to sponsor an outstanding woman to attend a Higher Education Resource Services (HERS) Institute in 2011. Women faculty members or administrators who have a proven record of professional growth and responsibility, and who have a keen interest in campus administration and the challenges of growing a university rich in international and intercultural diversity, are encouraged to review the institutes and apply for the one that best suits individual circumstances.

The Bryn Mawr Summer Institute offers a two-week residential program. The HERS Institute at Wellesley College offers four three-day sessions across the 2011-2012 academic year. The HERS Institute at the University of Denver offers a two-week residential program. Visit the HERS website for more information: http://www.hersnet.org/institutes.asp.

HERS Summer Institutes have earned sterling reputations for expanding horizons, providing exposure to new and exciting ideas, fostering enduring mentoring relationships and preparing women for institutional leadership roles. Recent UT participants include Cynthia Peterson, professor in the Department of Biochemical, Cellular, and Molecular Biology; Joan Heminway, professor in the College of Law; Maxine Thompson Davis, dean of students; Sarah Gardial, vice provost for academic affairs; Carolyn Hodges, vice provost and dean of the graduate school; Dixie Thompson, professor and department head of Exercise, Sport and Leisure Studies; Barbara Klinkhammer, associate professor and associate dean of the College of Architecture and Design; and Nissa Dahlin-Brown, associate director of the Howard H. Baker, Jr. Center for Public Policy.

The campus selection process will require that each applicant submit three items: a current CV, a letter describing the applicant’s reasons for application and how she will contribute to our international and intercultural initiatives and a letter of support from her dean, director, department head or supervisor. Send these items to Pam Hindle at 218 Student Services Building.

Application materials must arrive at the institutes by Dec. 1; therefore the UT application deadline is Friday, Nov. 12. Outstanding applicants will be recommended to Chancellor Cheek for review of campus materials and selection of this year’s candidate. The candidate must then apply to her chosen institute and provide required documents by the institute’s deadline.
