KNOXVILLE — Is it hard for you to hear when someone whispers? Are you playing your music too loudly and worry your hearing is slowly fading?
The Fourth annual Open House for Free Hearing Screenings can help. The event is from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 14, at Gate 9 of Neyland Stadium at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Hosted by the UT Student Academy of Audiology (SAA), the event is free and open to the public.
“We can answer any questions you may have about hearing loss, hearing aids or dizziness,” said third-year audiology student and SAA president Alison Ward. “We take a brief history, screen your hearing and discuss the results with you. Everyone leaves with a goody bag, and we have snacks in the waiting room. It’s quick, simple and worth your while.”
In addition, each person who gets his hearing screened will receive a raffle ticket with the chance to win one of more than 20 prizes. These include Ice Bears tickets and gift cards for Moe’s Southwest Grill, Bonefish Grill and Bliss.
Hearing loss affects millions of people, and the world is becoming increasingly noisier, Ward said.
“More and more hearing loss is being identified in the teen and young adult populations due to iPods, car stereos, concerts, etc.,” Ward said. “The open house is an excellent way to see if your hearing has been affected and to get more information on how to prevent that damage from happening. Also the doughnuts, cookies and giveaways never hurt anyone, either.”
Other donors for the event include Krispy Kreme, Mellow Mushroom and Starbucks.
