KNOXVILLE — World-renowned guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela will present their unique blend of rock and metal with Hispano-classical overtones at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 31, in Cox Auditorium in the Alumni Memorial Building. They also will feature special guest Bobby Long.

The cost is $5 for students, $20 for faculty and staff and $25 for general admission. Tickets are available through KnoxvilleTickets.com or by calling 865-656-4444.

Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero met in Mexico City while playing for a thrash metal band. Since teaming up, their sound has evolved to encompass several styles of lyrical and rhythmic guitar. After moving to Dublin, Ireland, Rodrigo y Gabriela played at the 2005 Oxegen Music Festival, launching their careers and an extensive tour schedule. Although they first rose to popularity in Ireland, they broke into the U.S. music scene, making feature appearances on MTV, “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” and “Lopez Tonight.”

Tom Hughes of The Guardian newspaper wrote this about Rodrigo y Gabriela: “Those busking roots show through in their easy camaraderie with the audience (as do their metal ones, via all the devil-horn hand gestures), and the priority seems to be pleasing the crowd rather than making an artistic statement.”

This event is sponsored by the Cultural Attractions Committee.
