A 3-year study performed by Richard Allington, professor in the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences, shows the positive effects of summer reading. Students who brought books home for the summer had significantly higher reading scores than other students and were less affected by the “summer slide” — the decline that especially afflicts lower-income students during the vacation months. His work is featured in the New York Times.
