KNOXVILLE — As part of its 60th anniversary celebration, WUOT Public Radio will present world-renowned pianist David Northington in a free concert at 8 p.m. on Monday, May 24, in the Lambert Recital Hall of the new Clayton Center for the Arts in Maryville.
Northington is a professor of piano at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, School of Music and serves as a member of the 91.9 Inc. Board for WUOT.
The program will feature the music of Robert Schumann, such as “Scenes from Childhood, Op. 15” and “Arabesque, Op. 18,” as well as a number of waltzes by Frederic Chopin.
Admission is free. No reservations are necessary; seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
“David is a tremendously talented, award-winning musician who has performed around the world, and it’s a great honor for the station to be able to feature him during one of our 60th anniversary events,” WUOT Director Regina Dean said. “We’re also very excited to be able to present this concert at the new Clayton Center for the Arts in Maryville. It’s a beautiful facility and a wonderful location in which to thank our listeners in Blount County for their support.”
Northington has received critical accolades for his performances around the world. At his New York debut recital at Carnegie Recital Hall, “The New York Times” called Northington “an immensely gifted musician … who combines the technical mastery of a virtuoso with the musical sensitivity of a poet.”
His tours have included the United States, eastern and western Europe, Canada, China and Russia. In addition to recitals and concerto engagements, he has given master classes at many of the leading conservatories in these countries.
As an Artistic Ambassador for the U.S., Northington has toured extensively in France, Spain and Portugal.
In addition to broadcasts throughout Europe on the Voice of America, he has filmed recitals in the historic Tallyrand Theatre in Paris for telecast on French National Television. Northington has a compact disc recording of the waltzes of Chopin on the Centaur Records label.
In May 2008, he was one of three guest artists/faculty at the Bosendorfer International Piano Academy in Vienna, Austria. In the summer of 2010, Northington will be on the artist faculty of the Interharmony International Music Festival in Germany.
Since receiving degrees at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and the Yale University School of Music, Northington has taught at several universities. His teaching awards include the Tennessee Music Teachers Association’s Teacher of the Year Award and the Tennessee Governor’s School of the Arts Outstanding Teacher Award. Northington also has received the Tennessee Arts Commission’s Artist of the Year Award and recently was named the national 2010 Artist of the Year by the academic honor society Phi Kappa Phi.
