The Great Decisions Program, coordinated by the Center for International Education and funded by the Ready for the World initiative, brings speakers from around the country to address our nation’s most pressing foreign policy issues.

Leonard currently writes the hybrid blog/column “How the World Works” — a venue for exploring the interconnections between globalization, energy policy, economics and politics. Prior to this role, he edited Salon’s technology and business department from 2000 to 2005. From 1996 to 2000 he was Salon’s lead technology reporter. Salon is an award-winning online news and entertainment Web site combining current news, personal essays and criticism along with popular staff-written blogs about politics, technology and culture.

Leonard is the author of “Bots: Origin of a New Species,” published by HardWired in 1996, and described in a New York Times review as a “playful social history of the Internet.” His work has appeared in Rolling Stone, Wired, Newsweek, The New York Times Book Review, The Nation, San Francisco Magazine, Sierra Magazine, the Far Eastern Economic Review, the San Jose Mercury News, the San Francisco Chronicle and numerous other publications.

Before becoming a journalist Leonard studied Mandarin Chinese for 10 years and lived and traveled extensively in East Asia. He currently resides in Berkeley, Calif., with his two children.
