KNOXVILLE — Graduate students will read their award-winning fiction and poetry at this semester’s final Writers in the Library event at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 13, in the Hodges Library Auditorium.
The event is free and open to the public. Parking is available in the University Center Garage at a fee of $1.00 per half hour.
Each year, students in the Creative Writing Program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, compete for the John C. Hodges Graduate Writing Prizes in fiction and poetry.
The Hodges Graduate Writing Prizes are named for the long-time UT English professor and author of the “Harbrace College Handbook,” for whom the Hodges Library also is named.
This year’s winners in fiction are:
1st place — Bradford Tice, graduate student in English, for “Skin;”
2nd place — Ryan Woldruff, graduate student in English, for “Of Rain, A River;”
3rd place — Charlotte Pence, graduate student in English, for “The Table.”
Winners in poetry are:
1st place — Michael Levan, graduate student in English, for “Carving Spaces;”
2nd place — Jessie Janeshek, graduate student in English, for “Love Poem Too Late;”
3rd place — Joshua Robbins, graduate student in English, for “Sparrows Sold for a Copper Coin & Not One Falls to the Ground.”
The Writers in the Library program is sponsored by the UT Libraries and the Creative Writing Program in the UT Department of English. The series brings various writers to campus throughout the year to read from their works. Writers visiting campus this semester have included novelist Richard Bausch and hip hop poets Rhea Sunshine and Black Atticus.
The series began in 1999 and is managed by the UT Libraries Jack E. Reese Writer-in-Residence. The current writer-in-residence is Kali Meister, a writer, performer and playwright.
