Marco Institute Symposium to Study Humanism and Its Economies

The Marco Institute for Medieval and Renaissance Studies will host a symposium on “Humanism and Its Economies” March 5-6, 2009.

The symposium takes a fresh interdisciplinary approach to the Renaissance and its re-evaluation of the place of man and woman in the universe. This academic symposium will bring together a group of international scholars to explore how a range of “economies”—both material and symbolic—organized the intellectual cultures of northern European humanists.

The symposium will schedule eight speakers in four panels over two days, as well as a roundtable discussion. All sessions will take place in Hodges Library Auditorium. Attendance is free but registration is required by Friday, Feb. 27.

The symposium’s organizers are English department faculty Jane Bellamy, Heather Hirschfeld and Anthony Welch. For more information or to register to attend, please visit http://web.utk.edu/~marco/symposiums/symposium09.html, or e-mail marco@utk.edu.
