Justice Sharon Lee to Deliver ’09 UT Law Alumni Lecture

KNOXVILLE — Sharon Gail Lee of Madisonville, Tenn., the newest member of the Tennessee Supreme Court, will deliver the 2009 Distinguished Alumni Lecture in Room 132 of the College of Law at noon on Feb. 25.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

Lee, a 1978 graduate, became the most recent UT College of Law graduate to join the Tennessee Supreme Court when she was sworn in by Gov. Phil Bredesen in October 2008. Previously, she was a member of the Tennessee Court of Appeals, Eastern Section, having been appointed by Bredesen in 2004.

Before her initial appointment to the bench, Lee developed a wide variety of experience in both civil and criminal litigation. She began the practice of law in 1978 with J.D. Lee and Associates in Madisonville. She subsequently worked in various partnerships and as a solo practitioner before her appointment by Bredesen to the Tennessee Court of Appeals in June 2004.

Lee earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration with high honors from the UT Knoxville, and later graduated in the top 15 percent of her law class. She is a member of the Tennessee Bar Association and was a member of the House of Delegates of the Tennessee Bar Association from 2003 until 2008.

She is president of the East Tennessee Lawyers’ Association for Women and a previous member of the board of the Tennessee Lawyers’ Association for Women. She previously served as secretary and member of the executive board of the Knoxville Executive Women’s Association and is a member of the board of directors of the Boys and Girls Club of Monroe County.
